In a nutshell ‘‘The Oxford Murders‘‘ is about an American called Martin. (Elijah Wood) who moves to Oxford to study, he moves in with this nice old lady whom was married to a man that Martin admired. It starts out normal, introducing characters (somewhat badly, but introducing nonetheless) In the beginning they concentrate on Martin wanting a professor by the name of Arthur Seldom (John Hurt) as his thesis director, that failed, later on they accidentally meet at the place where Martin is staying, they both discover that the land-lady has been murdered and Seldom starts talking about a note he got which he claims is a first of a series. The rest of the movie is a twist of events and random murders, ending in a plot twist.
This movie has a certain 23/Butterfly effect/Law and order feel to it. This movie is actually based off a book. I’ll admit, I like the general story behind it, but honestly the script was poorly-written, it felt forced. The story-line moved way too fast for the type of movie it is, These types of movies are usually ease into the rush of things. Not throw everything at you at once, it didn’t have any form of build up, the characters themselves didn’t act like normal people.
The characters were generally not as well rounded as I like in my movies, they were bland, had no personalities, and were in general just forgettable. They also made the mistake of making everyone in the movie suspicious or batshit-insane, so after while you just gave up trying to guess who the murderer is.
There are a few good points about this film or at least it had potential. The plot could’ve been amazing, the setting couldn’t have been better, and if they had given to writers more time or hired better writers that are more used to making books into movies it would’ve been amazing. Unfortunately this movie is a B-Movie desperately trying to be an A movie.
All in all I don’t recommend this movie if you’re looking for something good and exciting to watch, but if you’re bored and are ready for completely random plot-twists then this is the movie for you.
This is one of the first actual reviews I have written, I’m mainly doing this to approve my English, which seems to be getting worse by the day since I moved to a non-English speaking country.
Constructive criticism will be much appreciated.
